dc.description.abstract | The author made and presented five artists’ books, the chronic freedom Series, exclusively for cannabis-growers and sympathizers in southern Humboldt County, California, the heart of a region that became the cradle of US cannabis in the 1980s. He considered that the books’ exclusivity in design, content and presentation would be vital to challenge the stigmatization of people working in illegal cannabis and a contribution to achieving substancial changes in the approach to the issue worldwide.

dc.description.extract | In this chapter, I begin the discussion with how the chronic freedom series (2010a, 2010b, 2010c, 2010d, 2010e) diverges from the recent history of artist’s book practices, and how making the series’ books precious, difficult and monumental addressed cannabis-grower stigma. Next, I set out the elements of each book’s construction, and the requirements for their release and exclusive presentation. I explain my use of exclusivity to shield the artwork’s presentations from —and reject engagement with— the dominant media narratives of illegal growing and to foster an intimacy among participants that heightened feelings of grower-solidarity and comradeship. I also recount how in some cases this exclusivity, and the intimacy of the books’ contents, undermined these objectives. Then I revisit two sources of cannabis stigma that in spired my approach: The apparent impossibility of outsiders to understand the stories of illegal growers without resort to dominant tropes of failed Sixties ideals, and a form of hybrid cannabis stigma within illegal growing communities against being “only a grower.” In the closing sections, I place this latter form of cannabis stigma in the context of the past half-century of counterculture grower communities’ evolution in the southern Humboldt County region.
