dc.description.abstractspaEl libro provee ejemplos de cómo las políticas y las prácticas de inmigración en varias partes del mundo se han visto afectadas por la crisis económica, y cómo este fenómeno ha ocasionado no sólo cambios económicos, sino sociales y de percepción de la identidad. La primera parte aborda la respuesta de los flujos de migración a las condiciones económicas cambiantes impuestas por la recesión en Estados Unidos, Portugal, el Reino Unido, Alemania y Finlandia, mientras que en otro capítulo se explica cómo Filipinas, uno de los países que más reciben remesas, ha tratado de mitigar con ellas los impactos de las continuas dificultades económicas. Además, el libro cierra con capítulos que dan cuenta de los sentimientos antiinmigrantes que se han generado tanto en Europa como en Estados Unidos.
dc.description.extractAlong with the many other disruptions it caused, the 2008-2009 economic crisis had a strong impact on the movement of people throughout the world, and that of labor migrants in particular. Migrants faced worsening employment prospects in destination countries, often coupled with more stringent entry regulations. They were usually obliged to accept lower wages and worse working conditions to keep or recover their jobs. Nevertheless, returning home was not a viable option for many because the situation is even worse in their countries of origin. Overall, the crisis produced varied —yet in some ways similar— situations in many parts of the world in terms of shifting policies and changing attitudes toward immigrant populations. This volume contains papers originally presented at the Metropolis International Steering Committee’s Academic Forum on “Impacts of the Recent Economic Crisis on International Migration,” held at CISAN-UNAM in Mexico City in March 2012. The book provides just a few examples of how immigration policies and practices in many parts of the world have inevitably been affected by the “great recession.” The first five chapters explore how migration flows responded to the changing economic conditions brought on by the recession in five specific and very different country cases: the United States, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Finland. The following chapter explains how an important remittance-receiving country, the Philippines, has tried to mitigate the impacts of continuing global economic difficulties. The two final chapters analyze how economic problems have kindled social backlash and antiimmigrant sentiments among some sectors of the population in Europe and the United States.
